A Female Amish Lady's Perspective

The Amish – WHY???  Female Response

Here is a little bits and pieces of our Old Order Amish.  We believe in having our own private Churches and our own private schools, etc.  We go through first to eighth grade in school.  Have to pay our own school taxes plus help the English pay their school taxes which I really don’t think is quite fair, but if that is how it shall be we want to be satisfied too.  We have no electricity, have to work hard to make a living but imagine that is healthier for us than to just play around.

We have big gardens and can a lot of food for our winter use then there’s a lot of weeds we have to hoe if we want our gardens to produce good.  Then leave it up in higher hands to make it grow.

We make our own clothes; have to make a lot of wood to keep our stoves going over the winter to keep us warm.

We wouldn’t want our pictures to be taken.  No radios or televisions.  We use gasoline engines to run our wash machines to do our laundry.  Have to put up a barn full of hay, straw and oats to feed our animals.  Well the straw we use for bedding the cattle.  We like to raise our own beef, chickens and pigs for our meat.

Seems with all the taxes, etc. we have to work hard to make a living.

The women sew for their families, make all their clothing, etc. plus make quilts and crafts to sell if we find time to do it.

Guess it takes both our people and yours if we can just do our part and help each other when needed, etc.

We use kerosene lamps for lights for our houses.  We don’t go to the stores to buy food very often.  We do some, but try not to do it very often.  We milk the cows by hand.  Use the horses to plow our fields and work up the fields to plant or sow the fields.  Seems like everybody has their own job to do.
