Makin' Whoopie... Pies that is
Whoopie Pies (a traditional Amish recipe)
Whoopie Pies are a most loved traditional Amish treat. Made like a sandwich with two generously sized soft cake-like chocolate cookies and a fluffy vanilla cream filling they are the ultimate nostalgic comfort food. Legend has it that Whoopie Pies had their humble beginnings in Pennsylvania where Amish women would bake them and pack them in lunchboxes. Supposedly, Amish children and farmers would yell, "Whoopie!" upon discovering one of these treats in their lunch.
You can bake up a batch yourself using this traditional Amish recipe... you might even hear your family shouting, "Whoopie!"
Chocolate Whoopie Pie Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup thick sour milk or buttermilk
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 egg
In a bowl combine flour, baking soda, cocoa and salt; set aside.
In a separate bowl combine buttermilk, hot water and vanilla; set aside
In a large mixing bowl cream together the sugar and shortening for about 2 to 4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat until well combined. Alternately mix in flour mixture and buttermilk mixture in batches; occasionally scrapping down side of bowl and beating until smoot.
Spoon 1/4 cup mounds of batter about 2 inches apart onto large buttered baking sheets. Bake in 350º preheated oven for 11 to 13 minutes or until top of cookies are puffed and spring back when lightly touched. Remove from the cookie sheets and cool on a wire rack or white paper towels.
Filling Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup shortening (can substitute butter for half of the shortening)
- 1 cup confectionary sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup marshmallow creme
- 1 to 2 teaspoons of milk (as needed)
Blend all ingredients together with 1 teaspoon milk until fluffy and creamy. Add another teaspoon of milk if needed. Spoon a generous dollop of filling on half of the cooled cookies (on flat side). Place another cookie on top of each to make a sandwich. Wrap individually with plastic wrap. Can be frozen.

Thanks, for the twist on the resipe, i have made something similar which is MUCH better than the cheapo full of preservative stuff you buy in the store and they are VERY good, kids love them, i get usually end up with a gutt ache though LOL
I tried making whoopie pies last night using the lazy mans way with the duncan Hines box mix but they came out incredibly flat. Should I use shortening instead of the boxes recommended veg oil? Or just use less water?
Amish are allowed to have desert? I thought they were all about the basics?
I have never heard that Whoopie Pies were Amish! My wife makes the best whoopie pies I've ever had and your recipe looks very similar to hers except she substitutes Marshmallow Fluff for marshmallow creme (much better but mostly found only in New England). We make a huge batch every year in May and freeze them so they last all summer long. You can't have too many at once because all that shortening makes them fattening but they are sooo good. There is a bakery in Freeport Maine that has been so successful selling whoopie pies that there is a movement in Maine to make it the official state dessert.
Thanks for the recipe...I was searching for this specific recipe since last week as I want to prepare the pies for my cousins birthday...Thanks again...
These are delicious. I filled them with a seven-minute frosting, which tastes much like marshmallow. I made these for the refreshment stand at my daughter's school play, and watched people just savor them! Used the 2/3 cup of Ghiraldelli chocolate and they came out very chocolate-ey. I also used a small ice cream/melon scoop and ended up with 14 pies.
Thanks for this article. These look so delicious! I can't wait to try and make them myself :)

These Whoopie Pies look delicious, but I would rather swap the sugar ingredient for honey if that was possible. I was having a bad day but every cloud has a silver lining, glad I found this recipe.Regards, Mary Argent
